Many games split the stake across two settings — a coin value and a number of levels or coins per line — rather than offering a single amount. The arrangement confuses people regularly, and its origins explain both why it exists and why it survives.
Where it comes from
Physical machines took coins of a fixed denomination, and playing more than one per line was how a player increased the wager. Software inherited the model, then generalised it by making the coin denomination itself adjustable.
The result is two multipliers where one would do, and a total stake that is the product of both together with the line count.
The arithmetic
Total stake equals coin value multiplied by coins per line multiplied by active lines. Change any one and the total moves, which is why adjusting what looks like a small setting can double the amount at risk.
Checking what the total actually is

Why the system has not been replaced
Operators configure the available coin denominations to suit their market, and the two-control system lets one build serve very different stake ranges without recertification. It is a deployment convenience that happens to be inherited from mechanical hardware.
The practical instruction
Establish the total per round and the quotation basis before anything else. Both are one glance away, both are routinely skipped, and skipping either is enough to make every other number read from the paytable wrong by an order of magnitude.
